This nice Grady White had a little issue with the diesel generator fuel tank. Although the main fuel tanks were contamination free, the 40 gallon generator tank had heavy water contamination.
We accessed the fuel tank through the sender opening and removed 5 gallons of water. I know, wow! After the tank was completely cleaned, we pumped the remaining 20 gallons of fuel out for disposal because of the age.
How did that water get in there? Condensation? Did the owner buy contaminated diesel fuel? Well, I don’t know. I’ve always believed that honesty is the best policy and this was one of those situations that could not be explained.
The important point here is to remember to keep an eye on your auxiliary fuel source as well as your main fuel source. Just because one fuel tank is contamination free does not mean they all are.
