A local banking institution recently called us requesting fuel tank cleaning for their two emergency backup power generators. They had not been cleaned in 7-8 years, and one was exhibiting signs of water contamination.
We began by cleaning the fuel tank floors which revealed heavy amounts of solid contamination. Obviously this contamination needs to be removed in order to minimize problems if the tanks ever have to be refilled in an emergency situation. Furthermore, one fuel tank was contaminated with water as seen in the photo of the cloudy fuel. This was particularly troubling as it obviously posed an immediate threat to the readiness of the complete backup generator system. This system is used to power computer systems that run multiple site locations. Having any amount of downtime is not an option.
Ultimately, the tanks were properly cleaned and the water contamination was removed. Recommendations for minimizing future risk of water contamination were also addressed.
