After fueling this 31′ Contender, the owner sensed an overpowering smell of gasoline. Thinking he may have a fuel leak he quickly called us to investigate.
Upon arrival, we lifted this 15 year old deck for a closer look. We were able to see fuel residue on top of the tank near the sender unit area and prepared the tank for a pressure test. After applying pressure to the tank, it was immediately apparent that there was a leak at the sender unit interface.
We corrected the problem by cleaning and smoothing the sender unit interface and installing a new gasket. No further leaks were found.
Remember that our equipment is air operated for safety reasons, do not attempt to use an electric pump around gasoline.
Tip: Fortunately this was a minor problem which was easily corrected. Occasionally, we do identify leaking fuel tanks that drain into the bilge and require an immediate pumped out. If you smell fuel and think something is wrong, trust your instincts. Get to a safe location, turn off all electrical power and give us a call.
